Scott Thompson, Rector

Holy Cross called Scott Thompson to lead the congregation as Rector in late 2007. Scott was previously rector of New Life Episcopal Church in Mosinee, Wisconsin. He is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. His first love was music and he had a desire to play the drums as a professional musician in a rock band. He became focused on full-time ministry in his mid-teens. Scott received his BA in Biblical Studies from Grace School of Theology in 1986, and a master of theology from the Dallas Theological Seminary in 1991. He received a certificate in Anglican studies from Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary in 1999. 

Scott and his family live in the Sugar Land area. He enjoys spending time with his family, singing, playing the guitar and drums, reading, running, weightlifting, and riding his motorcycle. His passion is the local church and seeing lives transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.


Steve Ettling, Director of Music and Worship

Steve Ettling joined Holy Cross in April 2017. Steve is a graduate of the Musicians Institute (Hollywood, California) and is not only a seasoned worship leader, but an accomplished instrumentalist.

Steve is passionate about what he does and he knows why he does it; to glorify God and invite his people to worship God in Spirit and truth.



Kari Richardson, Director of Children's Ministry

Kari Richardson joined Holy Cross in October 2017.  Kari is very Scripture centered in her personal life and in her ministry. She has a passion for leading children and their families in Bible-based spiritual formation that is also culturally relevant. She is a teacher, and a teacher of teachers, with 25 years of ministry experience. 

Kari is a graduate of Texas Christian University (B.S. Social Work) and Bethel Seminary (St Paul, MN) from which she received a Master of Arts in Children’s and Family Ministry. Kari has served in congregations of varying denominational affiliation, and is a training specialist for Group Publishing.  Kari lives in Missouri City, Texas.



Michael Ray Garvin, Youth Ministry Director


Michael Ray Garvin joined Holy Cross in October 2017. Michael is passionate about mentoring youth and has dedicated himself to reaching out to youth and teaching them how to live a Christ-centered life while facing the challenges of growing up in today’s society.

Michael is a former NFL athlete, a football and track and field champion at Florida State University, and is currently a professional strength and fitness trainer. He has been active in youth outreach in all walks of life, including organizing and leading a street ministry aimed at youth and young adults.

Michael and his wife, Alesha, live in Katy, Texas with their three young children.


Alesha Garvin, Invite Welcome Connect Leader 


Alesha Garvin was selected to lead the Invite Welcome Connect Ministry at Holy Cross in October 2018.  Alesha and her family joined Holy Cross in late 2017 and she brings a huge passion for the Lord and enthusiasm to Holy Cross.  Alesha leads and coordinates the Welcomer and Greeter teams who welcome our guests, and works to connect newcomers to other ministries at Holy Cross.  

In her spare time, Alesha enjoys writing and has recently authored her first book.  She and her husband, Michael Ray, and their three  young children live in Katy, Texas.


Jessica Nelson, Director, Holy Cross Kids Preschool

Jessica Nelson was selected as Director of Holy Cross Kids Preschool in August 2016.  Jessica previously served as assistant to the director for three years prior to assuming the leadership of the school. Both of Jessica's children attended and graduated from the Preschool in years past.

Jessica and her family have been active members of Holy Cross for several years.  She brings an in-depth knowledge and experience to the existing operations and also a strong background in child development. Jessica, her husband and two children live in Sugar Land.


Diane Kurtz, Communications Manager

Diane Kurtz is responsible for all internal and external communications for Holy Cross Church. Diane has more than 25 years' experience in office administration, marketing, corporate communications, and public relations in the corporate world, but now happily devotes her efforts to getting the message out about all that Holy Cross Church is doing, who we are, and how YOU can be a part of a warm and friendly church family.

Diane has been an active member at Holy Cross since 2001 and has been involved in many of the ministries at Holy Cross.  She lives in Sugar Land and loves spending time traveling and scuba diving. Diane studied Business Technology from 1974-1978 at the University of Houston.


Laura Avila, Office Manager

Laura Avila joined Holy Cross in June 2018. Laura is responsible for the day-to-day office and administrative duties for Holy Cross.  Laura's past experience in business management has been a great fit at Holy Cross as our Office Manager.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas A&M University and a MBA degree from the University of Houston.

Laura is also active in her community, serving on the PTO board at her children's school. She and her family live in Sugar Land, Texas
