Living by the Book

by Howard G. Hendricks, William D. Hendricks

Learn to Study the Bible for Yourself!

In his book The Man in the Mirror, Patrick Morley writes:

“Personally, I’ve never known a man whose life has changed in any significant way apart from the regular study of God’s Word.”

That being the case, on Saturday, 9 November, Holy Cross Men will begin learning how to effectively study the Bible for themselves.

You know the old adage:

“Give me a fish and I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, and I will eat for a lifetime.

That’s the goal of this new study series. To give you what you need to study the Bible for yourself. And Living by the Book is the tool we’ll be using to get you there.

Tired of reading the Bible only to put it down frustrated that you can’t get more out of it? If you know what that’s like, and you’re tired of it, this study is for you!

Living by the Book will show you (step by step) how to observe, interpret, and apply the biblical text in a way that will lead to greater insight, deeper understanding, and real life transformation.

Howard Hendricks—Bio

Dr. Howard G. Hendricks was a longtime professor at Dallas Theological Seminary and speaker for Promise Keepers. Upon his graduation from Dallas, Hendricks accepted the pastorate at Calvary Independent Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas. An opening on the seminary staff led Hendricks to begin teaching twice per week. After one year on staff, Hendricks resigned his post to pursue a doctorate at Yale University. However, the president of the seminary, John Walvoord, asked Hendricks to delay his doctorate and return to Dallas as a teacher.

For over fifty years, Dr Hendricks was a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught Bible Exposition and Hermeneutics to incoming freshmen. He mentored many Christian leaders, including Chuck Swindoll and Tony Evans.

Dr Hendricks authored sixteen books and ministered in over 80 countries. He also served as chaplain to the Dallas Cowboys football team from 1976 to 1984.

Benjamin Franklin once said during a time of great crisis...

“We can all hang together, or we will all hang separately"

One of the reasons why some Christian men don’t grow in their faith is because they think they can do it all alone. But living the Christian life isn’t easy, and God never meant for us to do it alone. We all know, that in the world, the cards are pretty much stacked against us. Indeed, how many people do you know… how many commercials have you seen… how many songs do you hear on the radio that encourage you to walk more faithfully with your God?

Just think how much easier it would be, and how much more you would get out of your walk with Christ, if you had a regular group of guys who face the same struggles that you do, but who really want to grow in their walk with Christ.

Do you sense Christ calling you to be part of this fellowship of Christian men?

Executive Chairman,

Man in the Mirror

For decades Patrick Morley has been regarded as one of America’s most respected authorities on the unique challenges and opportunities facing men. Through his speaking and writing, he is a tireless advocate for men, encouraging and inspiring them to change their lives in Christ.

In 1973, Patrick founded Morley Properties, which for several years was one of Florida’s one hundred largest privately held companies. During this time, he was the president or managing partner of fifty-nine companies and partnerships.

In 1986, Patrick started The Man in the Mirror Bible Study, which has grown to include approximately 10,000 men—100 men live in Orlando, Florida, and the others online in all fifty states and throughout the world. In 1989, he wrote The Man in the Mirror, a landmark book rooted in his own search for purpose and a deeper relationship with God. With over three million copies in print, The Man in the Mirror captured the imaginations of men worldwide and was selected as one of the hundred most influential Christian books of the twentieth century. Altogether, Patrick is the best-selling author of twenty books and more than 750 articles.

In 1991, Patrick founded Man in the Mirror, headquartered in Orlando, Florida. They’ve helped 35,000 churches impact the lives of 12,000,000 men worldwide. Their vision is “for every church to disciple every man” through local area directors who help churches disciple men more effectively. “The ministry of Man in the Mirror exists,” says Patrick Morley, “in answer to the prayers of all those wives, mothers, and grandmothers who have for decades been praying for the men in their lives.”

Patrick Morley graduated with honors from the University of Central Florida. He has earned a PhD in management, completed postgraduate studies at the Harvard Business School and Oxford University, and graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary. He lives in Winter Park, Florida, with his wife, Patsy. They have two married children and five grandchildren. Learn more at www.maninthemirror.org.
